A helminthic infestation provoked by the activity of pinworms in the human body, called “enterobiasis,” is a fairly common phenomenon among young children, as this is facilitated by active knowledge of the world around them through taste buds. However, adults can also be infected with pinworms, which is equally dangerous and unpleasant. How to get rid of pinworms at home?

Treatment of enterobiasis, as a rule, does not involve placing the patient in a hospital, since this helminthic disease can be easily cured at home with the help of medications that have pronounced activity against parasitic roundworms, including pinworms. However, with a long course of enterobiasis, complications may develop, which are an indication for hospitalization of the patient, where therapy will take place in a complex and under medical supervision.

In this information article we will consider the following topic: “How to get rid of pinworms in adults using highly effective drugs, as well as using traditional methods of treatment?”

Drugs or traditional medicine

At the initial stage, it is important to establish the degree of damage to the body by pinworms. This factor is key in choosing a treatment method, since drug therapy and treatment with traditional methods have their own specific characteristics:

  • Treatment of pinworms with highly effective antiparasitic drugs or folk remedies does not take much time, does not require a specific diet or changes in the rhythm of life in general. However, the duration of therapy with traditional medicine is longer than with drug treatment;
  • The effectiveness of antiparasitic drugs for enterobiasis reaches 100%. Traditional medicine is less effective than medications. For this reason, in case of massive infestation, it is reasonable to use antiparasitic drugs;
  • Antiparasitic medications have a certain degree of toxicity, which undoubtedly negatively affects the patient’s body. Traditional medicines are based on natural components of plant origin, which cause a beneficial effect on the human body due to the content of a large number of various microelements, as well as a gentler removal of pinworms;
  • Antiparasitic drugs have contraindications for use, which in some cases is a serious obstacle. Traditional methods of treatment can often be used at any age and have no significant contraindications, except for individual intolerance to the components;

It should be understood that if the therapeutic dosage prescribed by the instructions or by a specialist is followed, no adverse effects are observed when taking antiparasitic drugs, that is, the toxic effects of the drugs are minimal and do not contribute to the occurrence of complications. Therefore, consulting a specialist before taking any drug is of great importance. Self-treatment, without consultation, can cause serious health problems.

Note. Some folk remedies for the treatment of enterobiasis are made from slightly poisonous plants (for example, wormwood or tansy) and have a negative effect on the body due to the content of toxic substances (in particular, thujone). Accordingly, taking such drugs is prohibited during pregnancy, some chronic diseases, etc.

Are worms and pinworms the same thing?

In fact, the question is quite strange and it indicates a lack of even minimal experience of “encounters” with parasitic worms.” To begin with, let’s immediately answer the question: “Are worms and pinworms in humans the same thing?”

The answer corresponds to the question: “Yes and no.” Next we will look at this in more detail, and after reading this article everything will fall into place for you.

What are worms? Worms, called “helminths” in scientific circles, are parasitic worms, the existence of which directly depends on a living organism, be it an animal, plant or human. The very concept of “parasite” implies the dependence of one living organism on another. This dependence is absolute and affects all spheres of life activity of worms, of which there are actually only two: nutrition and reproduction. Without a carrier or, in other words, a host, the existence of worms is impossible. There are more than 10,000 species of helminths; only about 400 species can exist in the human body.

What are pinworms? Pinworms are a type of parasitic roundworm (class of nematodes) that can live in the human body. In other words, pinworms are worms. It is simply impossible to say otherwise, and this explains one of the components of the answer to the main question – “yes”.

How do worms differ from pinworms? Next, we will touch on the general classification of human worms into classes and explain what the significant difference is.

This point is of great importance, since there is a high probability of re-infection with pinworms after treatment. This is explained by a specific feature of the life cycle of pinworms, namely, the method of laying eggs.

Female pinworms lay eggs on the skin adjacent to the anus. During the process of laying eggs, females secrete a specific sticky substance, due to which the eggs attach to the surface of the skin tissue and mature. This process is aimed at gaining access to oxygen to pinworm eggs, since without oxygen circulation the maturation of the embryos is impossible.

The substance secreted by females causes severe itching in the anus. When you try to scratch the irritated area, the eggs fall under the nails and onto the hands of the patient, who subsequently spreads them everywhere.

Therefore, it is very important to get rid of pinworm eggs during the treatment process. To eliminate the possibility of secondary infection, the following points should be adhered to:

  • Thorough hand washing before eating and after defecation;
  • Carrying out full wet cleaning using disinfectants and strong detergents;
  • Wet cleaning of upholstered furniture using the above-mentioned products, as well as household appliances;
  • Underwear must be changed daily;
  • Hygienic procedures for intimate areas should be carried out 2-3 times a day. First, we carry out hygiene procedures “for the butt” with soap, after which we proceed to hygiene of the genital organs;
  • Washing and subsequent ironing of underwear and bed linen;

In addition, to achieve maximum therapeutic effect, a repeated course of treatment is provided. A repeated course of treatment, regardless of the chosen treatment method, is carried out 2 weeks after the main course.

Prevention of pinworms in adults

Preventive measures in adults are based on following simple rules:

  • personal hygiene, in particular cleanliness of hands, is a mandatory preventive condition;
  • treat hands with antibacterial agents after visiting public places;
  • It is better to change your underwear twice a day;
  • It is better to wash at the highest possible temperatures;
  • Be sure to iron your clothes after washing;
  • clean carpets and rugs outside from time to time;
  • each family member should have their own personal hygiene products, such as a towel;
  • keep the house clean - wet cleaning significantly reduces the risk of invasion;
  • if there are toys in the house, they should all be washed with special detergents;
  • eat only clean, heat-treated food;
  • drink only filtered, boiled water;
  • Avoid contact with street animals; if it occurs, be sure to wash your hands with soap.

As a preventive measure, you can undergo an examination every six months and take tests for worm infestation.

Having highlighted the key features of two possible methods of treating enterobiasis in humans, we will move directly to the consideration of antiparasitic medications and folk remedies to get rid of pinworms.

If you want to quickly get rid of pinworms, your choice is drugs. What drugs can be used for enterobiasis in adults and how:

  • Pyrantel (Helmintox, Nemotsid and its other analogues) is an effective and relatively safe drug. Today, Pirantel and its analogues are considered the most effective in the fight against nematodes, including pinworms. It acts as follows: it blocks the action of enzymes belonging to the class of carboxylic acid hydrolases (cholinesterase), and also causes depolarization of the neuromuscular connection, which ultimately leads to paralysis of the parasites and their subsequent death. The advantage of Pirantel is its safety when taken and the rare occurrence of adverse reactions. For enterobiasis, adults are prescribed a dose calculated according to the following scheme: 10 - 20 mg / 1 kg of body weight, but not more than 1 gram, after meals, that is, for adults weighing less than 75 kg - 3 tablets, adults over 75 kg of body weight body – 4 tablets;

Note. As a rule, Pirantel is prescribed for enterobiasis due to the above-mentioned advantages. Therefore, this drug is ideal for an adult as a medicine for pinworms at home.

  • Piperazine adipate. This antiparasitic drug has specific activity against two types of nematodes: pinworms and roundworms. It acts as follows: causes sustained muscle paralysis due to disruption of the functioning of the neuromuscular system. It has low toxicity, is highly effective, the effectiveness rate for enterobiasis reaches 100% after a repeated course. The therapeutic course for enterobiasis using this medication varies in duration and is selected individually, depending on the clinical picture;
  • Medamin. This anthelmintic drug has specific activity against nematodes living in the intestinal lumen. The active component of Medamine is carbendacim. It acts as follows: causes sustained paralysis of the muscular system of pinworms, as a result of which they are unable to attach to the intestinal walls. The therapeutic course is 1 day, 3 doses of the drug are provided immediately after meals. The therapeutic dose of Medkamin is calculated according to the following scheme: 10 mg of the drug / 1 kg of body weight and is divided into 3 doses;
  • Vermox (Mebendazole, Mebex, Telmox100 and other drugs based on mebendazole) is an effective medicine for enterobiasis. Helps suppress glucose consumption by preventing the synthesis of tubulin in cells, which causes depletion of glycogen reserves in the body of pinworms. It also helps to reduce the synthesis of adenosine triphosphoric acid, which causes inhibition of the biochemical processes occurring in pinworm cells. For adults affected by pinworms, a single dose of 100 mg of the drug is prescribed;
  • Nemozole (Albendazole, Vormil, Zentel and other albendazole-based drugs). Selectively inhibits the process of microtubule formation by disrupting the polymerization of beta tubulin (protein). This leads to destructuring of the cells of the digestive system of worms. Helps suppress glucose consumption, which causes depletion of glycogen reserves in the body of parasites. Helps reduce the synthesis of adenosine triphosphoric acid, which significantly inhibits the biochemical processes occurring in pinworm cells. Causes blocking of the movement of various organelles in muscle cells. For adults with enterobiasis, a single dose of 400 mg of Nemozol is prescribed during a meal or immediately after it;

The last 2 drugs on the list have a wider spectrum of action and, therefore, greater toxicity. One should lean in their favor only in case of insufficient effectiveness of less toxic drugs, or in case of mixed helminthic infestations, that is, in the case of the presence of 2 or more types of worms belonging to different classes.

Next, we propose to consider several effective methods of treating pinworms using traditional medicine.

Recipe for vodka tincture with wormwood:

  • We need 5 teaspoons of wormwood and 0.25 vodka;
  • Fill the wormwood with vodka, close the container with a lid and place it in a room protected from light;
  • The product must be infused for at least 7 days;
  • It is necessary to take the medicine 3 times a day in a volume of 1 tablespoon, the therapeutic course lasts until the medicine runs out. Taken 30-40 minutes before meals;

Recipe for a decoction based on tansy, chamomile and wormwood:

  • We need 10 grams of dry tansy inflorescences, 50 grams of dry wormwood and 20 grams of dried chamomile flowers;
  • It is necessary to pour 0.2 boiling water over the mixture of herbs, place the container on the stove and boil for 20 minutes;
  • Strain through cheesecloth;
  • It is recommended to take the resulting product half an hour before the main meal, 2 times a day in a volume of ½ glass. Therapeutic course – 4-5 days;

Recipe for treatment with cognac and castor oil:

  • We will need 50 ml of good cognac (at least 4 stars) and 50 ml of castor oil;
  • Take cognac on an empty stomach and drink the oil after 10 minutes;
  • It is better to carry out the procedure before going to bed in order to have a bowel movement in the morning. Therapy lasts up to 4 days;

Enema recipe based on tansy, wormwood and chamomile against pinworms:

  • We will need dry inflorescences of tansy, wormwood and chamomile in equal proportions;
  • Take 8 grams of herbal mixture and pour 0.2 liters of boiling water;
  • Let it brew for 3-4 hours;
  • Strain through cheesecloth;
  • An enema is given once a day, the therapeutic course is 5 days;

The greatest effectiveness when using therapeutic enemas is achieved in the case of preliminary cleansing of the intestines from feces.

It should be understood that taking any medications during pregnancy is not advisable, although in some cases it is acceptable. Such a case may be massive damage to the body by pinworms, when the risk of damage to the fetus or mother from the toxic or mechanical effects of this type of worm is higher than the risk of damage from drugs.

Also, the above folk remedies are not suitable for pregnant women. But there is a way out.

How to get rid of pinworms during pregnancy

First of all, it is worth paying attention to the life cycle of pinworms. Adult pinworms live no more than 4 weeks in the human body, therefore, if reinfestation is excluded, self-healing will occur after 4 weeks, that is, they will all die on their own.

In the old days there was one effective way to get rid of pinworms. It was necessary to soak a cotton swab in oil and insert it into the anus overnight. Thus, female pinworms will not be able to lay eggs, since the passage for them will be closed. Accordingly, after 30 days the pregnant woman will be healthy.

Also, in addition to such a long-term “treatment,” there are folk remedies that are quite suitable for pregnant women.

Treatment of pinworms with pumpkin seeds:

  • We need 0.1 kg of peeled fresh pumpkin seeds;
  • It is necessary to grind pumpkin seeds using a coffee grinder or any other device;
  • Pour the resulting slurry with olive oil and stir thoroughly;
  • The resulting product must be eaten 3 hours before meals on an empty stomach. It is advisable to carry out the procedure in the morning. The therapeutic course is 3 days;

You can also prepare a decoction from the seeds of the above-mentioned fruit according to the following instructions: 100 grams of peeled pumpkin seeds, pour 1/2 liter of water, boil for 20 minutes. You need to drink the product every day, in the morning, on an empty stomach, for 7 days.

It is believed that natural carrot and beet juice is an effective remedy for pinworms. As a treatment, you need to drink 120-150 ml of natural juice on an empty stomach. The best time is morning. The duration of the therapeutic course is 15 days.

Recipe for thyme infusion:

  • To prepare a one-time therapeutic dose you will need: boiled water - 0.2 liters, 2 tbsp. dry thyme;
  • Place the raw material in a thermos, pour boiling water over it, and let it brew for 3 hours;
  • The resulting product must be drunk completely, after half an hour we drink a saline solution. It’s easy to prepare a salt solution: ½ tsp. salt per 0.25 liters of warm water;
  • Therapeutic course – 7 days, daily intake;

Taking medications is possible only immediately before childbirth. In this case, Pirantel or Piperazine is prescribed.

It is possible to use suppositories as a medicine for enterobiasis in a pregnant woman. The following suppositories are suitable: Vormil, Prostada or Gelma-Vitol.

Treatment of children

Most often, pinworms settle in the bodies of children. Their presence can be visually noticed even with the naked eye. To cure a child of parasites, it is important to know how to get rid of pinworms in a child.

If parasites are detected, treatment of pinworms in children should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist. The doctor will select the medicine and prescribe the exact dosage, while he will be guided by the individual characteristics of the baby. This is important because many drugs can cause allergies.

It will also be interesting: Does zinc paste really help with enterobiasis?

Children are prescribed the same drugs as adults, but a different dosage is calculated. It is important to prepare the baby’s body for therapy. The preparatory procedures are as follows:

  • on the eve of treatment, you should not take foods that have a fixing effect;
  • It is recommended to eat soups and fermented milk products;
  • in the evening, on the eve of treatment, have a light dinner; you should not feed the baby heavily before starting to take anthelmintic drugs.

As soon as the child wakes up in the morning, he is given the medicine in the dose prescribed by the doctor. In the evening you need to give your child a laxative. While getting rid of helminths, you should monitor the general condition of the child.

Piperazine

Instead of medications, the child can be treated with traditional methods; this is a more gentle option for treating pinworms in children. But first, you should ask your doctor how to remove pinworms from a child at home. If your baby is bothered by pinworms, then how to get rid of them should only be decided with a doctor; you should not take any measures on your own.
