Pyrantel in the treatment of giardiasis in children

Main characteristics of the drug

Before taking Pyrantel, you should be sure to read the instructions in order to avoid negative consequences; it is important to know the features of using the drug and take into account all existing contraindications. In addition, the patient must be prepared for the period of time after which the drug begins to act.

Pyrantel has a wide spectrum of action and has an anthelmintic effect. The product has a detrimental effect on both mature worms and immature parasites. But it is not active among migrating larvae.

Pyrantel from Giardia, entering the active phase of action, leads to blocking the transmission of nerve impulses in the body of the parasite, as a result of which it dies and leaves the human body already dead.

The action of Pirantel is based on the blockade of the nerve impulse, which prevents the worms from attaching to the intestines. And due to the cessation of the functioning of the suction cups, the parasites lose the ability to linger in the intestines, which are in constant motion.

Worms leave the body of a sick person in their original form along with feces. After Pirantel begins to act, the parasites lose their original appearance and come out in parts and several times.

When does the drug start working?

Most often, Pirantel begins to act within the first 24 hours after its use. Dead parasites leave the body during the same period, during a trip to the toilet. The timing of the parasites leaving the body depends on the functioning of the intestines.

The following factors may affect how long the medicine lasts:

  1. stomach contents;
  2. features of the structure and functioning of the intestines;
  3. quantity and quality of food consumed before taking pills;
  4. problems with stool;
  5. drug dosage;
  6. metabolic time.

Instructions for use

The drug is available in the form of yellow oval tablets. There is a special line on one side that makes it easy to split the tablet in half if necessary.

The tablet consists of 250 mg of pyrantel pamoate, which is the main active ingredient. In addition, the composition contains corn starch, gelatin, magnesium stearate, talc and sodium carboxymethyl starch. A standard package should contain three blisters of medicine.

But in addition to the tablet form, Pyrantel for the treatment of lambiasis can be produced in the form of a suspension. Some patients mistakenly confuse the suspension with syrup - this is not entirely correct.

To determine the exact dosage of taking the drug, you need to know the person’s weight, as well as undergo an analysis to determine the type of parasite living in the body.

Pyrantel is taken directly during a meal or immediately after it. It is better to do this in the morning, since at this time of day the product is especially active.

Use the product according to the standard scheme.

  1. For giardiasis or mixed invasion, doctors prescribe Pirantel at the rate of 10 mg per 1 kg of person’s weight. The age of the sick person is not taken into account.
  2. The suspension is suitable for use by children under two years of age. It is allowed to dilute the drops with water or take 125 mg of the prepared suspension once.
  3. It is recommended to give a child 3–6 years old 1 tablet.
  4. For children over 12 years of age, the dosage of the drug is doubled: 2 tablets at a time.
  5. If a person weighs less than 75 kg, then he should take 3 tablets at a time. If the specified weight is exceeded, 4 tablets of the product are taken.

The drug must be chewed, since this is the only way to achieve a positive result from the treatment. Pyrantel is used once, but if there is a risk of re-infection, it can be repeated after a few days.

Using the product requires compliance with the following instructions:

  1. after the drug has been drunk, you should not use laxatives;
  2. if enterobiasis has been detected, then all family members should be treated with Pirantel at the same time;
  3. at the end of the course of treatment, you should take repeated tests for the presence of helminths in the feces;
  4. In order to avoid re-infection with parasites, you should thoroughly clean your living space and clean your clothes.

Tinidazole for giardiasis: how to take it for giardia

Giardia is a protozoan that settles in the human intestines. To remove this type of parasite, specialized medications that have an antiprotozoal effect are used.

Tinidazole is considered a good remedy for Giardia. This medication has not only an anthelmintic effect. The active substances of the drug can effectively resist most anaerobic bacteria. Another medicine can be used to remove amoebas.

Tinidazole is produced in the form of tablets intended for internal use. The price of this medicine is 180-270 rubles. The drug is a strictly controlled medicine, therefore it is released only with a specialized prescription.

Pharmacodynamics and indications for use of Tinidazole

For a long time, doctors were of the opinion that the drug was active only against anaerobic microorganisms. However, recent studies have been conducted that refute this opinion. It turned out that Tinidazole is active against Giardia and amoebae.

How does the drug work? When the active component of the drug enters the body, it provokes the degradation of the DNA of a parasite or bacteria. The medication begins to act approximately 10-20 minutes after its use. The active substances of the anthelmintic are metabolized in the liver and excreted through the intestines and kidneys.

Tinidazole is active both against sexually mature individuals and against infective eggs. However, it was found that the medication is not able to resist migrating larvae.

For what diseases can the medicine be used? Reviews from doctors indicate that Tinidazole is most active against Giardia. The drug is also able to resist amoebas. Another indication for the use of the drug is trichomoniasis. Sometimes this drug is used in the treatment of helminthic infestations, which are accompanied by secondary anaerobic infections.

If a person has become infected with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori due to giardiasis, then Tinidazole can also be used. But in this case, it is necessary to use broad-spectrum antibiotics along with the anthelmintic.

For mixed parasitic infestations, this medication can also be used. However, in this case, it is recommended to use it along with drugs that include benzimidazoles derivatives.

Instructions for use of the drug

The tablets should be taken during meals with plenty of warm water. When choosing the dosage of Tinidazole, the type of disease is taken into account.

For example, for giardiasis or trichomoniasis, the daily dosage is 2 grams for adults and 50-75 mg per 1 kg of body weight for children. It is worth noting that for giardiasis or trichomoniasis, a single use of the drug is indicated.

If the patient's intestinal or hepatic amebiasis progresses, then the daily dosage is increased to 2-2.5 grams for adults and 50-60 mg per 1 kg of weight for children. The duration of therapy also increases. Usually the duration of treatment is 3-6 days.

Tinidazole is a relatively safe drug. However, it has a number of contraindications for use, among which are:

  1. Pregnancy.
  2. Childhood. This parasite remedy is not prescribed to patients under 3 years of age.
  3. Organic disorders of the central or peripheral nervous system.
  4. Disturbances in the functioning of the hematopoietic system. Taking anthelmintic medication is strictly prohibited in case of leukopenia, pancytopenia or thrombocytopenia.
  5. Allergy to the ingredients of the product.
  6. Breastfeeding period.

During drug therapy, it is strongly recommended to abstain from drinking alcohol. Also, along with Tinidazole, you should not take other anthelmintic drugs that contain the same active ingredients.

The following side effects may occur while taking the medicine:

  • Dyspeptic phenomena. These may include attacks of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Typically, dyspeptic symptoms appear at the beginning of drug therapy and resolve on their own over time.
  • Allergic reactions. If not treated in a timely manner, anaphylactic shock or Quincke's edema may develop.
  • Disturbances in the functioning of the nervous system. When using Tinidazole, there is a risk of weakness, fatigue, headaches, hand tremors, and muscle cramps. In severe cases, the patient develops neuropathy, incoordination, or ataxia.

The best analogues of Tinidazole

Flagyl is often used instead of Tinidazole. This remedy is just as effective and relatively low-toxic. Flagyl tablets are usually used to remove parasites from the body. It is advisable to use suppositories only in the treatment of infectious diseases of the genitourinary system.

The cost of tablets is 125-150 rubles. The drug is dispensed with a prescription.

The active component of the drug quickly enters the systemic bloodstream and begins to act approximately 30-35 minutes after consuming the product.

The active substance of the drug interferes with the process of utilization of nutrients that are used in the life of the worm. Under the influence of this factor, the parasite dies.

Flagyl tablets are advisable to use in the treatment of giardiasis, amebiasis (intestinal and hepatic), trichomoniasis, and pseudomembranous colitis. The drug is also allowed to be used in cases where secondary infections occur against the background of helminthiasis. It was also found that the drug is active against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.

The dosage of the drug is selected taking into account the patient’s age and type of invasion. For giardiasis, adults need to consume 750-1000 mg of the drug daily. Children are prescribed 375-500 mg. The duration of therapy is 5-6 days.

For amebiasis and parasitic infections, the dosage increases to 1.5 grams for adults. Children are allowed to take no more than 450-600 mg. The duration of therapy in most cases is 6-8 days.

Flagyl is not prescribed to children under 6 years of age, pregnant or lactating women. Also contraindicated for use are acute renal failure, disorders of the hepatobiliary system, leukopenia, allergies to the components of the drug and organic lesions of the nervous system.

During therapy, the patient may experience the following complications:

  1. Metallic taste in the mouth, drying of the oral mucosa, pain in the epigastric region, pancreatitis, anorexia, stomatitis, glossitis, stool disorders.
  2. Dizziness, migraine, incoordination, drowsiness, irritability, confusion, ataxia. In rare cases - muscle cramps, hallucinations, peripheral neuropathy, increased nervous excitability, mental disorders.
  3. Neutropenia, leukopenia.
  4. Allergic reactions (including fever).
  5. Dysuria, cystitis, polyuria, urinary incontinence. Also, if you use high dosages, the color of your urine may change.

A good alternative to Tinidazole is Naxojin. This remedy for parasites appeared relatively recently, but has already proven itself to be good. The cost of tablets is 560-720 rubles.

The active component of the drug quickly enters the systemic circulation. The active ingredients of Naxogin provoke the degradation of DNA of parasites and bacteria. As a result of this microorganism, the protozoa die. The drug destroys only sexually mature Giardia. The drug is inactive against migrating larvae and infective eggs.

It is worth noting that Naxojin tablets can be taken not only for giardiasis. Another indication for use is amoebiasis, vaginitis and acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. If a person has progressive extraintestinal amebiasis, then using this remedy for parasites is not recommended.

For giardiasis, adults need to consume at least 500 mg of the drug daily, and children - 10-15 mg per 1 kg of body weight. If a person is diagnosed with amebiasis, the dosage remains the same.

The duration of anthelmintic therapy for giardiasis is 5-7 days, and for amoebiasis - 5-10 days. When diagnosing other parasitic infections, the daily dosage for adults is 250-500 mg, and for children - 10 mg per 1 kg of weight.

The duration of therapy ranges from 2 to 7 days.

Naxojin tablets are not prescribed to children under 3 years of age, lactating women or pregnant women. Also contraindicated for use is an allergy to the ingredients of the product, organic damage to the nervous system, dysfunction of the hematopoietic system, severe liver failure, renal failure.

During drug therapy, it is recommended to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages, saline laxatives, enterosorbents and antibacterial agents that contain nimorazole.

When using Naxojin, the following side effects may occur:

  • Vomit.
  • Skin rash.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Dysuria.
  • Leukopenia (reversible).
  • Stomatitis.
  • Glossitis.
  • Darkening of urine.
  • Pseudomembranous colitis.
  • Neuropathy.
  • Epileptic seizures.

The most popular analogue of Tinidazole is Ornidazole. This medication is widely used in the treatment of protozoal infections. The cost of Ornidazole tablets is 200-350 rubles.

What is the mechanism of action of this medicine? This medication prevents the proliferation of bacteria and parasites. Ornidazole also disrupts the process of cellular respiration of Giardia and has a pronounced bactericidal effect. The drug begins to act 10-20 minutes after administration, since its active components quickly enter the systemic bloodstream.

The medicine is allowed to be used for giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, extraintestinal and intestinal amebiasis. Also indicated for use are ureaplasmosis, demodicosis, trichomoniasis, stomach and duodenal ulcers.

The tablets should be taken with meals. The dosage is selected taking into account the patient's body weight. When treating giardiasis in children, it is 40 mg per 1 kg of weight. Adults need to take 1.5 grams of the product daily. Duration of therapy is 1-2 days.

When treating other parasitic diseases, the dosage is 500-1500 mg for adults and 15-30 mg per 1 kg of body weight for children. The duration of taking Ornidazole is usually from 1 to 3 days.

This medication is contraindicated for nursing and pregnant women, children under 3 years of age and people with allergies to its components. Also, the drug is not prescribed to patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or organic lesions of the central nervous system. If you have kidney or liver failure, you can take the tablets, but in this case the dosage should be adjusted.

Side effects of Ornidazole:

  1. Allergic manifestations - urticaria, itching, swelling of the subcutaneous tissue or mucous membranes.
  2. On the part of the hematopoietic organs - a decrease in the number of leukocytes in the blood, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia.
  3. Disturbances in the functioning of the nervous system. A person may experience dizziness, migraine, tremors, loss of coordination, drowsiness, or insomnia. When consuming higher dosages, muscle cramps may develop.
  4. Disturbances in the functioning of the digestive tract. When taking the medication for a long time, a metallic taste in the mouth, dryness of the oral mucosa, constipation or diarrhea, and nausea sometimes appear. In rare cases - vomiting, anorexia, changes in taste.

During pregnancy

Almost all medications are prohibited during pregnancy, as they can lead to negative consequences for both the woman and the unborn baby. But there are also drugs that have not yet been fully studied, so it is not yet possible to accurately confirm or refute their harm to health.

Comments from pregnant women who took Pirantel indicate the absence of negative effects of the drug on the body of expectant mothers at all stages of pregnancy.

Pirantel has very few contraindications, so its use is relatively safe while pregnant. Firstly, to get rid of helminthic infestation, it is enough to take the medicine only once and in a minimal dosage. Secondly, the drug is poorly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and practically does not linger in the blood. Its concentration in the body is so low that it does not in any way affect the development of the fetus in the womb at any stage of pregnancy.

Pregnant women claim that the effect of using Pirantel is only positive. There are practically no side effects, the course of treatment does not take a long time, and the parasites begin to disappear quite quickly and without any negative consequences.

But do not forget about the individual characteristics of a pregnant woman’s body. During the period of bearing a child, all interventions in the body are contraindicated, so experts try to avoid taking any pharmaceutical drugs.

Pyrantel is recognized as a completely harmless drug during pregnancy planning. The most important thing is to adhere to the instructions of your doctor and take the drug strictly under his supervision.

How to take Tinidazole for giardiasis?

Diseases caused by parasites that disrupt the healthy environment of the small intestine and gastrointestinal tract cause great discomfort to humans. To combat them, modern pharmacology has developed a wide range of drugs that can rid a person of harmful microorganisms. For giardiasis, for example, Tinidazole has worked well.

Pharmacological action and composition of the drug

Tinidazole has a wide spectrum of effects and is one of the effective parasitic drugs. Available in the form of 4 tablets, the use of which promotes the shortest removal of parasites from the body.

The main active ingredient of the drug is tinidazole. One tablet contains 500 ml. By having a destructive effect on the DNA of dangerous parasites when they enter the body, the medication helps to quickly eliminate and eliminate them. Harmful microorganisms and helminths are completely destroyed and removed from the lesion.

Single-celled parasites must leave the body as soon as possible, since the consequences of their vital activity can significantly weaken the immune system and deprive it of useful components.

The drug has high absorption in relation to blood cells, therefore it spreads quickly and is 100% bioavailable. After taking Tinidazole, its active components can be recognized in the blood for up to 14 hours, until it is completely eliminated from the body. The liver, kidneys and metabolites play an active role in the elimination of the drug.

One tablet contains the following components:

  • alginic acid,
  • starch,
  • magnesium stearate,
  • sodium lauryl sulfate,
  • microcrystalline cellulose.

Instructions for use

Tinidazole is a drug that has antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects. Its advantage over other medications is its active bactericidal effect aimed at anaerobic bacteria. In addition, it has a depressing effect on Trichomonas and Giardia.

Tinidazole should be taken in consultation with a doctor for the following infectious diseases:

  1. amoebiasis,
  2. anaerobic infections,
  3. trichomoniasis,
  4. Helicobacter,
  5. Giardiasis

The tablets are taken orally, the dosage is prescribed by a specialist depending on the degree of damage by microorganisms and individual tolerance to the drug. Typically, the course for adults in the treatment of giardiasis is 4 days.

For patients over 14 years of age, it is recommended to take the drug at a dosage of 1.5–2 g per day. Children under 14 years of age are usually prescribed one application of 50–75 mg per kg of body weight.

The medication should not be taken in a course without a specialist prescription, as the treatment period can range from 2 to 10 days. Only a doctor can decide how many days the patient’s body can eliminate all parasitic microorganisms.

The pharmacy should offer a range of drugs - analogues of the main active ingredient. These include Fazizhin, Vero Tinidazole, Tiniba.

Contraindications

Before using any medication, you must carefully read the contraindications that it has, especially if the drug was purchased independently without a doctor's prescription. Tinidazole is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • hypersensitivity, allergy to the constituent components of the active substance;
  • disturbances in the functioning of the central nervous system;
  • problems with blood formation;
  • age up to 12 years;
  • bearing a child;
  • lactation period.

When taking the drug, it is worth considering its interaction with other substances. Tinidazole is not compatible with ethanol. The combination of components included in the composition of the products can lead to a disulfiram-like reaction. No potential threat to the body was found when interacting with antibiotics. The medicine causes dark urine.

If Tinidazole is prescribed for use for more than 6 days, the condition of the hematopoietic system should be carefully monitored. During treatment, it is better to avoid traveling by car, as the medication can affect a person’s psychomotor reaction.

The drug is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age, but no special clinical studies have been conducted in this group to determine the safety of the drug.

Use during pregnancy

The medicine is not prescribed during pregnancy - the toxic substances contained in the drug can have a detrimental effect on the development of the fetus.

This risk especially increases in the first trimester, when the process of formation and development of all vital systems and organs occurs.

An exception may be a situation where the benefit to a pregnant woman outweighs the risk to the fetus, then the drug can be prescribed by a doctor in the second or third trimester.

The medication should also be discontinued during lactation. Three days after taking one tablet, the medication passes into breast milk. The toxic substances contained in the drug easily penetrate the fragile body of the newborn and lead to severe intoxication.

A pregnant woman is strictly prohibited from making an independent decision about the possibility of using the medicine. Only a qualified specialist can prescribe Tinidazole during pregnancy, based on the patient’s well-being and assessing the potential threat to the fetus.

Side effects

Experimental studies show that in most cases the drug is well tolerated. In rare situations, side effects have occurred that should be taken into account when taking the drug.

As a result of taking Tinidazole, the digestive system may cause dry mouth and pharynx, nausea, gag reflex and diarrhea. The central and peripheral nervous system may also be weakened during treatment - the patient experiences dizziness, headache-related ailments, lethargy, dysarthria, poor coordination of movements, and minor convulsions.

People susceptible to allergic reactions need to carefully monitor their condition, since after taking Tinidazole, urticaria, skin rash, skin itching, and angioedema may appear. In rare cases, transient leukopenia occurs.

Side effects include the following:

  • feeling of constant cold;
  • slight swelling of the arms and legs;
  • malaise associated with weakness;
  • increased sweating.

The occurrence of adverse reactions mainly occurs due to intolerance to the components or the self-prescribed dosage of the medication.

If the conditions described above occur while taking Tinidazole, you should immediately seek emergency qualified help. For minor and non-serious manifestations, you should visit your doctor as soon as possible for consultation.

Side effect

Despite the lack of negative reviews, Pirantel, like all other medicines, can be harmful to health.

Side effects of this drug are divided into several types:

  1. effect on digestion: the appearance of nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach and lower abdomen;
  2. problems with smell and taste;
  3. a slight increase in body temperature that lasts for several days;
  4. allergies, manifested in the form of rashes and redness;
  5. disorders of the central nervous system: sleep disturbances, increased fatigue and noises in the head.

More rare side effects include the following manifestations: migraine, paresthesia, hearing loss, blurred consciousness, hallucinations, signs of anorexia, diarrhea, changes in liver transaminases, itchy skin, eczema, leukemia.

All described phenomena are treated symptomatically, depending on the situation during which they appeared and the body’s reaction. The most common solution to problems is taking enterosorbents, which absorb all toxins and quickly remove them from the body. Taking these medications is appropriate in the presence of vomiting and fever. These include drugs such as Smecta, Polysorb, and activated carbon.

If after using Pirantel the patient complains of headaches, the doctor may prescribe paracetamol or caffeine.

If you have insomnia, you can take sleeping pills that are completely safe and available without a prescription: Donormil, Corvalol or Melaxen.

Giardia tablets for adults

Treatment of giardiasis in adults may differ slightly from that of a child. Here the dosage changes, and even the drug itself. Since an adult’s immune system is more stable, the doctor may prescribe more aggressive tablets for Giardia.

Reception for the purpose of prevention

Pyrantel is ideal not only for the treatment of giardiasis, but also for its prevention. If there are pets in the house, or a child attends kindergarten or school, then the product will help prevent the body from becoming infected with parasites. You must first consult a specialist to avoid the development of side effects of the drug.

Giardiasis can easily be called a problem of unwashed hands. Many people are embarrassed to admit their illness, so they simply tolerate it and do not seek treatment. However, today there are many effective remedies to cope with Giardia, so you should not be afraid to talk about disturbing symptoms.

But you shouldn’t take Pirantel without consulting your doctor. After all, it is a qualified physician who is able to conduct all the necessary tests and prescribe adequate therapy, which will quickly relieve the patient of an unpleasant disease.

Not long ago my health condition worsened. I began to feel constant fatigue, headaches, laziness and some kind of endless apathy appeared. Problems also appeared with the gastrointestinal tract: bloating, diarrhea, pain and bad breath.

I thought it was because of the hard work and hoped that it would go away on its own. But every day I felt worse. The doctors couldn’t really say anything either. Everything seems to be normal, but I feel like my body is not healthy.

I decided to go to a private clinic. Here I was advised, in addition to general tests, to get tested for parasites. So in one of the tests they found parasites in me. According to doctors, these were worms, which 90% of people have and almost everyone is infected, to a greater or lesser extent.

I was prescribed a course of antiparasitic medications. But it didn’t give me any results. A week later, a friend sent me a link to an article where some parasitologist shared real tips on fighting parasites. This article literally saved my life. I followed all the advice that was there and after a couple of days I felt much better!

Digestion improved, headaches went away and the vital energy that I so lacked appeared. To be sure, I took the tests again and no parasites were found!

Mechanism of action for giardiasis

Pirantel for Giardia is prescribed by specialists for severe forms of the disease, when other methods of therapy do not give the desired result. The drug acts on all forms of Giardia, at different stages of development.

After entering the body, the active substances of Pyrantel are sent to the intestines, where most of the lamblia multiply. The active components are practically not absorbed by intestinal cells, having a detrimental effect on parasites inside the organ. They destroy sexually mature individuals, stop reproduction and development. A small amount of active components enters the systemic circulation. Gradually, Pirantel is absorbed by internal organs and destroys pathogens there.

Giardiasis is a complex parasitic infection, which is difficult to get rid of in case of severe infection and weak immunity. Treatment is always prescribed comprehensively. Pyrantel is one of the components of a complex scheme. At the same time, medications are prescribed to strengthen the immune system, remove toxins, etc. It is also recommended to adhere to a strict diet. Only if all medical prescriptions are followed, an antiparasitic drug will help to finally get rid of the infection.

Instructions for use

Pyrantel against Giardia is best taken in the morning during breakfast. The drug begins to act immediately, the maximum concentration in the body is observed after 2 hours. During this period, you should do a cleansing enema to increase the effectiveness of the medication.

The tablet must be chewed, this is how you can achieve an effective effect. Pyrantel for giardiasis in children under three years of age, in the form of a suspension, is taken in the indicated dosage with meals. Can be diluted with water. Drink 125 mg of the prepared suspension at one time. The bottle should be shaken thoroughly before using the medicine.

Pirantel is practically not used for preventive purposes. After successful treatment, the human body develops immunity to Giardia for 3 months. Re-infection can occur if the immune system is weakened or if you are in a risk zone. You can take a tablet or drink a suspension to prevent infection through direct contact with an infected person.

Pyrantel is prescribed if clear symptoms of giardiasis appear:

  • diarrhea;
  • green stool;
  • there are mucus impurities in the stool;
  • stomach ache;
  • vomit;
  • symptoms of fever;
  • signs of anorexia;
  • increase in body temperature.

The required dosage is prescribed only by the doctor, based on the patient’s age, weight, degree of Giardia damage, and individual characteristics of the body. Pirantel helps against Giardia in 3 days.

Dosage of the drug for giardiasis in children and adults:

  • 1-2 years – 125 mg suspension;
  • 2-6 years – 250 mg or 1 tablet;
  • up to 12 years – 500 mg or 2 tablets;
  • adults up to 75 kg – 3 tablets;

In recent years, cases of infection with giardiasis have become more frequent, so elucidating the causes of infection, symptoms, and medications for the treatment of giardiasis in adults remains relevant for this disease.

Many people are falsely convinced that giardiasis is a chronic disease that is difficult to treat. However, doctors say that giardiasis is curable, and therapy should be carried out as early as possible.

Since giardiasis is widespread, knowledge of medications for giardia in adults is important. These simple microorganisms can cause a large number of complications, so timely treatment of giardiasis is one of the main reasons for their prevention.

What is giardiasis

Giardiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Giardia. These microorganisms cause a pathological process in the intestines and are manifested by symptoms of damage to the gastrointestinal tract.

Infection occurs through contaminated water, fruits, vegetables, and also through unwashed hands. Giardia cysts enter the gastrointestinal tract, where they transform into mature individuals. Reproduction occurs in the intestines.

Parasites feed on the host's nutrients. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and carbohydrates of the host are not completely absorbed into the blood due to parasitism by Giardia. This can lead to severe intoxication consequences. The resulting disturbances occur gradually.

Symptoms

The symptoms of giardiasis are extensive, but there are cases when the disease may not manifest itself at all. This happens in the initial stages of development. Giardiasis can manifest itself with the following symptoms:

  1. Abdominal pain.
  2. Nausea.
  3. Vomit.
  4. Small rash on the body.
  5. Abnormal stool.
  6. Paleness of the skin.
  7. Losing weight.
  8. Unpleasant sensations in the umbilical area.
  9. Bloating.
  10. Loss of appetite.
  11. Bitterness in the mouth.
  12. Pain in the right hypochondrium.
  13. Nervousness.
  14. Aggressiveness.
  15. Impaired performance.
  16. Headache.
  17. The presence of mucus in the stool.
  18. Intoxication syndrome.
  19. Allergic reactions.

To determine the disease, you need to consult a specialist and take a blood and stool test. Only after correct diagnosis can treatment begin. It should be remembered that improper treatment can be as harmful to the patient as its absence.

Stages of treatment for giardiasis

Treatment of giardiasis consists of stages. It is necessary to take into account that the treatment process includes a set of measures. Therapy is carried out by an infectious disease specialist, therapist or gastroenterologist. Only a specialist can determine the duration of treatment, dosage and frequency of use of the drug based on the individual characteristics of each individual patient.

Giardiasis therapy is three-stage. The first stage is compliance with hygiene rules. The first stage includes:

  • disinfection of living quarters;
  • compliance with personal hygiene rules;
  • the use of enzyme preparations to improve digestion (Mezim-Forte);
  • use of antiallergic drugs (Loratadine);
  • the use of activated carbon to relieve the toxic effects of parasites;
  • the use of choleretic drugs to improve its outflow;
  • following a special diet low in carbohydrates and high in vitamins and minerals in food;

Elena, 20 years old:

“I was diagnosed with Giardia cysts, I never complained about anything, itching on the skin periodically appeared (about once every six months), the dermatologist sent me to a gastroenterologist.

The doctor said that many people have Giardia, but if there are no associated problems in the gastrointestinal tract, then they do not interfere with life. But at the same time she prescribed a course of pills for 3 weeks. I took Albendazole.

After taking the tests, the result turned out to be negative. The drug turned out to be effective."

Inna, 24 years old:

“I got rid of Giardia the first time. Metronidazole and Ersefuril were prescribed. Course: 5 days. simultaneously 2 times metronidazole 500 mg. and 3 times a day Ersefuril 200 mg. On day 6, 1 tablet Mikosist. You can add a vitamin complex. It helped, but not right away. I am grateful to the doctor for his qualified assistance.”

“Traditional treatment helped me. I took raw pumpkin seeds. I started in the morning, then immediately drank 2 raw eggs. I put a warm heating pad on my right hypochondrium and went to sleep. Within 3 days, all symptoms went away.”

Diana, 28 years old:

“Actually, you don’t need to go to a gastroenterologist and get treatment, but to an infectious disease doctor, that is, a parasitologist. The doctor will prescribe you broad-spectrum medications. Do not self-medicate under any circumstances.”

it’s better to take Vermox (6 tablets for 2-3 days), keep the diet for a week while taking it, boil all bed linen and towels, decaris is an ineffective old drug, and there are a lot of side effects, from the hallucinogenic suffocating smell of chlorine to diarrhea and muscle cramps - in many countries prohibited.
